Things that happened today - castor

A pumpkin that I carved a snowflake in for Christmas. I'm not great with timekeeping sometimes.

In which I desperately scribble some lower quality material last minute in order to fulfil my personal and entirely arbitrary deadline of posting at least one article a month.

Theme music observations

This week I watched the final episode of The Book of Boba Fett. It wasn't until the end credits of this final episode that I noticed that the words to the theme are actually the main character's name. I was perplexed to how I hadn't realised that earlier until I discovered it was a special version of the Boba Fett theme for the final episode - compare and constrast with the normal Boba Fett theme from the rest of the series.

Speaking of theme music, is it me or is the theme used on the trailers for The Batman basically the Imperial March from Star Wars? Or am I crazy and neither of these things are true? I don't know. It's been a long week.

The reassurance of standards

I bought an office chair back in the early 2000s and despite a bit of wear and tear and an interim period of a few years in an attic it's survived quite well. And then a few days ago one of the castors broke.

In the big scheme of things tilting slightly and not rolling around with ease seems very little to have to deal with, but it completely shot my concentration for the best part of a day. My brain kept running away with possibilities - the likely unreliability of an attempted repair contrasted against the inconvenience, waste and loss of having to completely replace the chair.

I was therefore hugely relieved and quite surprised to discover that office chair castors are a standard size (50mm wheel diameter, 20mm stalk with an 11mm diameter), and entirely compatible with my chair despite its age. I ordered a replacement and it arrived less than 24 hours later and was quickly and easily replaced. The joy I felt was briefly overwhelming.

You might not be surprised by any of this. If so, I bow to your superior knowledge of the office chair industry. However, I still think this is worth noting as an occasion where everything just worked. It might not have. The replacement might have been the wrong height, or the stalk might have not fitted, or any number of other things.

I mention all of this only because I think over the last couple of years it's become increasingly important to find joy in small things - yes, even in things like office chair industry standards.

How to write a Jason Bourne movie

Finally, in case anyone needs any further direction on this, I thought I'd outline the basics of how to write any future sequels to the Bourne Identity, should they be required. Follow this basic pattern and you'll be fine.

  • Introduce some shadowy government intelligence agency types with scarily realistic over-reaching global surveillance ambitions.
  • Have Bourne calmly evade a level of sophisticated monitoring and tracking that could capture Santa Claus while maintaining no facial expression whatsoever.
  • Insert some kind of flashback or fight sequence at this point, or really at any point during the movie.
  • Have Bourne become involved in a car chase. At some point, his vehicle must become lodged across the front of another vehicle and driven at speed towards some peril.
  • Finally, have Bourne sustain an injury that would hospitalise any normal human being but merely leaves him with e.g. a limp, before ignoring it completely for some kind of final hand to hand battle with someone.

I hope that's cleared things up.
