Back in the bad old days of web development it was very difficult to style a HTML select element. Some browsers relied on the underlying operating system to render them, making it very hard to change their appearance in any way.

That was all a long time ago, though. Things are better now, right? Right?

There's been a lot of debate recently about our privacy online, sparked particularly by the revelations about the extent of US and other government surveillance of the internet. Wherever you stand it's clear that the issue has many viewpoints, with some now even claiming that privacy is dead.

I could weigh in on this, but I thought something a bit more practical would be helpful. You see, it's not just governments that monitor our activity online. Companies have been doing it far longer.

After slowness, endless patching and sudden serious vulnerabilities, I've made a decision - I'm going to try giving up Flash.

I'm taking the plunge and upgrading to Internet Explorer 10 on my Windows 7 machine, after Microsoft succumbed to common sense and realised they should make it available for non-Windows 8 systems. Obviously I've not had a chance to look at it thoroughly, but let's have some first impressions.
