Overdue Reviews: Inferno

A screenshot of flying the spacecraft from Inferno

Overdue Reviews is an occasional series in which I pretend to be a videogame journalist. This week: Inferno (the Odyssey continues) on PC.

I wanted Inferno for ages. It looked amazing; curvy spaceships, dramatic looking battles in space, over planets and even inside space stations, all wrapped in a daringly bright orange palette years before Homeworld 2 thought of it.

It spent a large amount of time in my CD drive, but strangely, I've hardly played it at all.

Overdue Reviews: Indianapolis 500

A blocky looking screencap of Indy 500 that really doesn't do the game justice

Overdue Reviews is an occasional series in which I pretend to be a videogame journalist. This week: Indianapolis 500 on PC.

Despite owning a copy of Indianapolis 500 since my first PC many years ago, I've never really played it properly. There wasn't much appeal, frankly. All you did was drive an Indy car round and round a big oval track. That might be interesting to watch, but it's not much fun to do.

But that didn't matter, because the real aim of the game was to cause the most spectacular crash possible.

Overdue Reviews: Network Q RAC Rally Championship

A view through the windscreen of a rally car onto a quite pixellated tarmac road.

Overdue Reviews is an occasional series in which I pretend to be a videogame journalist. This week: Network Q RAC Rally Championship on PC.

Prior to the rallying revolution that was 1998's Colin McRae Rally the nineties was a bit thin on the ground for decent rally games. The overly named Network Q RAC Rally Championship was therefore quite an exciting thing, particularly as it featured a stage near where I grew up.

Darker was a futuristic space simulator published in the mid nineties. I had a demo of it. It was unique and fascinating. I was captivated.

Overdue Reviews: Spintires: MudRunner

Overdue Reviews is an occasional series in which I pretend to be a videogame journalist. This week: Spintires: MudRunner on PC.

Multiplayer in MudRunner is a bit of a missed opportunity. It's hampered by confusing menus and the occasional bug, and once you're in there's no direction on what to do, unless slowly delivering logs with your friends appeals.

But I'm going to ignore all of that so that I can explain the joy of playing multiplayer MudRunner with my Dad. We don't get to play very often - small snatches of gameplay at random times - but when we do, it's a wonderful thing.

Overdue Reviews: Jedi Knight 2

Screenshot of Jedi Knight 2 showing, well, dull gameplay, frankly.

Overdue Reviews is an occasional series in which I appease my younger self's brief desire to be a videogame journalist by ranting or raving about part of or all of a game I've played in the past. This week: Jedi Knight 2 on PC.

Jedi Knight 2 was like getting into a supercar to find that the seats are uncomfortable. Jedi Knight 2 was like biting into a delicious looking apple to find it a bit soggy inside. Jedi Knight 2 was like meeting your hero only to find out they're not very interesting.

In short, Jedi Knight 2 was something of a disappointment.
