An open letter to websites that immediately want me to subscribe

Dear websites that immediately want me to subscribe,

You're just being too needy. C'mon. Tone it down a notch.

There are two ways you do this and both of them are annoying. The first is when you've barely loaded and I'm getting a popup from my browser asking me to turn on notifications. I haven't even read the first sentence of the page yet. Give me a minute, would you?

The second is the moment after I've read the first sentence and you ask again, this time in the form of some kind of massive, content-obscuring inline popup, demanding my email address. It's pretty aggravating.

Maybe this works for some people. Maybe you get a good response rate. I have no data to support that. Do you, I wonder?

I get that you have to attract and hold an audience, but this approach just seems desperate. I'd respect you far more if you just had good content and didn't keep hassling me to subscribe all the time.

Think about it this way. How would you react if you stopped me in the street to ask for directions and my immediate response was to ask for your phone number?

Just, I don't know. Calm down a bit.

Yours sincerely,

Most of the rest of the internet
