Step two: Make sure your paperwork is in order

Apparently anyone who has worked for an employer for more than 2 years is entitled to a redundancy payment. It may not be very much, but you're entitled to it. Grasp it with both hands!
There should be more information at Direct.gov.uk (UK only).
In terms of paperwork, you should get a P45, which you'll need in order to sign on. And if you're really lucky, you might get a hilarious letter outlining the thinly plausible reason why they're getting rid of you. You get bonus points if it contains any of the following words or phrases: "reshaping the business", "focussing on key strengths", restructuring, "time of uncertainty", or "valuable service".
